NOTES
By LEFT ATTACK.
The interstate match between Victoria and South
Australia is to be played on the Adelaide Oval to
day, and special interest will be taken in the doings
of our men. The geiection committee had a lot of
difficulty in securing a team, and, alter all their
hard work, it is gratifying to kuow that we are
strongly represented. The men chosen are:-F.
Delves, 0. E. Jones, E. O. Goodcn, C. Slack, W.
Furneaux, W. Bryning (St. Kilda): W. Joynt, W.
Box, R. Pennefather, V. Kansfotd (ii.C.C.)i W.
E. Summons (University), and F. Doyle (Essen
don). It will be seen that both in defence and at
tack it is a strong combination, but there is a
lack of pace about the centre, which may keep
die team back. The absence of James and John
Da vine will weaken the team in this respect, and
B. tfryning and J. Latham, two other fast men, are
also missing I understand that none of these
could, make the trip, and thus the task of the selec
tion committee was made extra difficult. Though
not quite the best team Victoria could put into
the field, it is still a strong: side, and should give
a good account of itself. Mr. \V. W. J. Forscer,
the secretary of the association, accompanies the
team in tlie capacity of manager, and, as the
president (Ur. Philip Shappere) will aiso be in
Adelaide, the men can be sure of being well looked
after.
The South Australian team which is to meet Vic
toria playi.d a practice match against the South
Australia team that has been chosen to play
against Western .Australia, on the Norwood Oval
last Saturday, and won by 19 goals to 0. It was a
very wvt day, but some fine lacrosse was played.
The winners' goals were shared by Mann (6), lium
phris (6), Cepp (3), Noblett (3), and fell (1).
The losers' half-dozen were thrown by Jaffrey (3),
Thomas, Maclennan, and Kewland (X each).
The Western Australian team which is visiting
South Australia consists of Mather, M'Donnell,
Eigle, Jackman, Kaye, Hughes, Tickell, Blythe,
Tjrie, CLaike, Wilson, Bolton, Harvey, Bromfiekl,
and Kell.
I have received the following letter from the
hen. secretary of the Natal Lacrosse Association,
to be handed on to the Victorian Lacrosse Asso
ciation. The letter shows the game to be pro
gressing in South Africa. Thus:-"Dear Sir,
Herewith I have pleasure in forwarding a copy
of fixtures in connection with the. Ratal Lacrosse
Association for 1905. We are experiencing a most
successful season, hiving four Durban clubs com
peting for the 'O'Halloran Wright' Challenge Cup,
m connection with tin Durban lacrosse Union,
whilst Maritzburg annualy /competes for the
. 'M'Alister Intertown' Challeifge Trophy -a 30
gnineas cup. So far, the Port has in three wins
to the City's two. A mixed Durban- team played
Maritzburg club at Durban on June 3, when over
1,000 spectators were present, showing that the
game is well established, it being only three years
ago that I pioneered the game into South Africa.
Old Durban players have been successful in start*
in^ the game at Johannesburg, Transvaal, and I
have already fixed up for a visit from Johannes
borg, uates being fixed far July 2S, Transvaal v.
Maritzburg, at Pietermaritzburg; Transvaal v.
Durban Union, at Durban, August 2; Transvaal *.
Natal, at Darban, August 5-the latter being the
first intercolonial fixture for Africa. The Trans
vaal team will be a hot one, including several
crack Canadians, also, I believe, C. L. Murray and
HandSeld, from Victoria. It is very pleasing- to
know that the game has been pioneered by Aus
tralians here. The Wanderers* club is composed
entirely of Australians. I an greatly gratified to
read of the progress of lacrosse in the West, where
the late Fied. Parsons and myself, both North
Adelaide club players, introduced the game in
1896.-Yours, 4tc., ¥. O'Halloran Wright, Hon.
See."
The Victorian premiership has been infused with
fresh interest, owing' to the defeat of the M.C.O.
by Esaendon. The premiers of 1901 bad twice
to strike their flag this season to M.C.C., but on
Saturday, on the Warehousemen's Cricket-ground,
Espendon avenged those defeats by 10 goals to 5.
It was a bad dfty as regards weather, and, with the
ground wet and slippery through the rain which
fell after half-time, it was anything bat pleasant.
Nevertheless, a grand exhibition of lacrosse waa
given, and the onlookers, though cold, were tho
roughly rewarded for their fortitude. The pU*
waa fast and clever is the first quarter, which
ended-Esaendon, a goals; H.fl.C! 2 goals ^ bat by
half-time M.C.C. had drawn leva, aid the score*
were fi goals all. After that, thon^h the game
waa always hard cod keen, Creadon did all the
scoring, and won by X0 goals to 5. For Guendon,
the captain (Jack Daviae) played a grand game at
centre. Bteet, Doyle, Dunn, Tyzack, Gay, and
Touzell may also be specially mentioned. Of the
losers, Shell, Bos, Aickin, Fpnnpfather. Uonfries,
and Jtoynt did moot, perhaps, in what was gene
rally acknowledged to be the game of the aeasan.

by 8 goals to 4' at Brighton. Th»
loam had rot the services of Slack, sad
their defence was thereby weakened ap
preciably. On the other hand, the 'Varsity ce

showed to advantage in passing. The periodical
