THE OAKLANDS HOUNDS.
By GOXE AWAV.
Our BQbet on Wednesday, (be 13th, was at the
**Jn**rn«s Corner," Oaklands Junction, where
an unusually large attendance of hunting folk had
'assembled at the appointed hour, for it was known
that we were to have a day in die heart of the
Oaklands country. Unfortunately, on account at
the execrable weather which prevailed, in the
6hape of a furious gale from the north-east, it
was surmised that 110 pood bunting could be had
on this occasion. Hounds were fit and game (den-1
tiful, but the storm soon removed every trace of .
Kent. When we were all mounted the outer
led us along the Oaklands-road as tar ac tteanaJ
Gflligan's farm, where we turned tn. Hnmda

vai soon running, and going in a semi-circle took
ub through Mr. Mi due's paddocks and down on to
tbe Wlldwood-road, where it made good iU eft
cape in a growing crop. Going then into what
is locally known as the "lijlithoase Gully" pad
decks it coon became evident that each hound in
tbe pack could have been provided with a tare
lor itself. The master spent some time in trying
to get on to a straight-going: hare, bit as this
wag not possible bonnds wen stopped, and the
master took ue bade again to Warlibv. Hounds
wen again eoon at wort, jutd for the rest of tbe
afternoon we had crane good runs over this and
the St. John's EetaU. tot at no time could

our deputt-masler, and when tbe word was given,
we trotted down Bell-street, to the east side of the
Merri Greek. Uore hounds opened on aomt vacant

through Messrs. Sheffield and Gay's;. A couple of
paddocks tenanted by Mr. Tomkins were next o»efc
with, after which we went at great speed through
Messrs. Crowle and Kelly's. Swinging. k&hJUtdej
we ran through Mr. J. Gilbert's, ana again beao
ing northerly we got on to tbe broad fields oc
cupied by Mr. E. Mouldeh. Up /la hero tbe pace
was a cracker, but by myCh hard riding hounds
were headed, and a welcome check SBSRed irtilch
relief to all. Starting on again liounds took na
over Mr. llemhry's Sue pastures, and Ue Uiea had
soon to reckon with the uncompromising double
which compounds the GsttipbellileM-lane ere Are
landed in safety in Messrs. Maltaahn'a property.
Host of the company got across all right, and We
followed hounds, which here swung to tbe right
and again to tbe north, as tbey streamed oyer us
old Thomastown racecourse, on through Mr.
M'Coy's paddocks, and tlicn over 6omc small hold
ings witb the names of whose occupants I am Jin
familiar.* Continuing, we crossed Mr. Urate
ling's big paddock, and next reached Mr. W.
Baker's expansive grass lands. At this- point the
pack turned -due west and crossed tbe Uerri Creek
-in flood-and floundered out on to more tA Mh
Baker's proj>erty. From here we turned, on ,4o
Glenbarry Estate, and having run through a couple
of paddocks hereon, bounds overtook their quarry
at the end of a 10 miles gallop. By tboae who
got to tlie finish it was said to have been 9- very
