Ben Lomond.
Since my last we have been visited
witl sickness, especially among the
children; our school has been but
poorly attended on this account for
the last two months.
The big slip which caused so much
anxiety at the time of the Tenterfield
opening is giving constant employ
ment to about twenty-five nmn. Not
withstanding the zealous way they
push on with their work the quantity
of earth removed is scarcely percept
ible, but if the dry weather continues
there is no danger to be appreheaded,
although the qnantity of earth on the
move-is enormous,
The lambing this season has been
rather a failure, on account of the
heavy storms. Shcaring has now com
menced. There will be a great in
crease of wool from this district this
season. Some of our wool-growers
were fortunate enough to keep back
last season's clip until the rise in wool,
by which one gefitleman profited fully
£700.
I see the township, of Ben Lomond
is for sale on December 4th, at Armi
dale. Easy terms willbe given. The
allotments are from ¼ up to 5 acres. A
good many of these will be bought up
quickly, as there is a good opening for
several businesses. The township is
laid out on each side of the line, and
surrounds the railway sta:ion.
The sports held in Glen Innes on
the 9th inst were not satisfwatory. Our
craekrunner went to compete. It was
not known until the last minute that
a blackfellow was entered under an
assumed name, and was given eight
ya-ds; at the same time he could
give any man on the .grounld four
yards. The running was under the
Sir Joseph Banks rules. A protest was
entered against the blaekfellow for not
stating he was an aboriginal and not
giving his performances. The protest
was disallowed. Perhaps some of your
sportingreadcrs will inform me, through
the columns of your valuable paper, if
the protest should be upheld, for, bar.
ring the blackfellow, our Ben Lomond
representative would have won the big
money.
The well.known Swallow has chal
lenged our crack to run 150 yards for
£20 up to £60. It is not yet decided
whether che challenge will be accepted
or not.
1 see Botany is not going to allow
Newcastle to top them in their handi
caps, for they are offering a £300
prize. Now, Newcastle, show your
pluck and top Botany.
