WRECK OF THE YOU YANGS.
MARINE BOARD INQUIRY.
TLUE Adelaide Marine Board held an inquiry
into the weck of the You Yangs on Satur.
day morning. Captain Veitch, first and
second officers, and chief engineer M'Killop,
were examined, but nothing fresh came out
in evidence. The captain stated that the iron
shifted, and this induced him to put thie ship
about. In making for Backstaire Passages
the deflection of the compasses brought tile
vessel about 40 miles to the westward.
The following verdict was returned:
The board is of opinion that the shifting of
cargo so deranged the compasses that the
master was uncertain of his position, but
after having ascertained this on the 14th,
when making Lipson Reef, he showed an
error of judgment in not dodging under the
lee of the land until daylight, especially as
the vessel iwas making such heavy weather.
The accident was caused by striking a rock on
the south side 9f Kangaroo Island, probably
Queen Rock. As thlere is no evidence of
carelessness or neglect on the part of the
master or any deficiency in the vessel's
appointments, the board does not propose
under the circumstances to take any further
action.
