Lieutenant C. H. Howard. and Corporal If.
Locock. invalided home from the front, ar
rived in Cessnock on Wednesday evening.
There was a very large gatherlng at the rail
way station to take part in the reception
arranged in their honour by the citizens re
ception committee, including the Cessnock
Boy Scouts, and the Ladies Red Cross Lea
gue, but unfortunately a few minutes before
the arrival of the train a heavy storm broke
over the town, and the reception had to be
dispensed with, but in spite of the heavy rain.
those present joined in giving three ringing
cheers for the returned men, as they were
being placed in the motor cars in which they
were conveyed in their homes. Lieutenant
Howard's return is due to severe shell shock,
from which he is still badly affected, and a
wound in the leg, received during the battle
of Messines Ridge, in June last, while Cor
poral Locock who is only quite a lad, has
load the misfortune to lose both feet as a re
sult of a severe attack of trenc feet. He
however. has been fitted up with two artifi
cial feet, by which he is enabled to walk
with the utmost ease and natrual appearance.
Private Cecil Whiteford, who came home on
the same transport was detained in Sydney,
but he is due to arrive on Saturday night.

Corporal White of the Victorian Artillery,
delivered a recruiting speech in Vincent-street
last night. Mr. M. Bailiee, president of the
War Service Committee, presided, and intro
duced the speaker who had with him a fine
collection of bombs, shells, bayonets, etc., and
a number of interesting German and Turkish
war trophies, about which he gave a very
interesting and detailed lecture, and concluded
by making an appeal for recruits.
