FLOODED MINE MEN
ON STRIKE
Men engaged on reclamation
work at Aberdare Extended
(flooded recently) struck in
protest against the gaoling of
western miners' secretary (J. H.
King), the Miners' Federation
reported.
Men on the dog-watch, held a
protest meeting, and day shut
workers had a meeting at the
pithead.
Lodge officials said that the
stop-work decision would not
apply to the skeleton staff ol
deputies and mechanics engaged
on safety and essential main
tenance inspections.
Mr. I. Williams, miners' presi
dent and chairman of the Coal
Mining Union Council, said the
C.M.U.C. would give early con
sideration—probably at the
week-end— to withdrawing safety
men from mines.
Northern deputies arc still
maintaining regular safety in
spections.
Minister for Fuel (Senator
Ashley) said In Canberra that
the Commonwealth Government
would make no attempt to stop
the withdrawal of safety men.
In reply to Senator Cooper
(Lib., Queensland), he said:. 'It
would be tlhie to do something
about it when the men are
actually withdrawn.'
