S CRICKET.
London Cricket containe a very eulegistio
notice of Leslie W. Pye, the brilliant yonung
Sydney player, who came into sucnh promin
ence last season. Pye in 47 innings (12 not
out) scored 2333 runs, thus averaging 66
por iinnings. In his first big match, namely,
against Queensland, he put together no less
thon l16; while this season he started by
making 136 in his first innings, and two days
afterwards made 239 not out efor Parramatta
against the Bawkesbury distriot. Yet again'
on December 11 he made 213 not out against
East Sydney. It is safe toesay that no young
cricketer ever put in abetter first season than
did the Parramatta batsman, and no one
would be enrpriosed to see him do well in the
coming initercolonial matches.
In the last English season '29 batsmen
scored more than 1000 rune, as against 89 in
1896. In the latter year, however, thee'e
were more matches on' account of the
preseneo of the Australlans, seven of whom
reached four fpaures. In the decade 1887.97
Dr. Grace failed on only one oooaslon to
reach the thousand, and went over '2000 on
two ocasions. Abel reached 2000 in three
yearsrunning, namely, 1895.6.7.
