Snooker titles cancelled
LONDON, Sunday (AAP-AFP). - The world
match-play snooker championship, which was to have
been promoted by Australian champion Eddie
Charlton in Melbourne from March 3 to 12, has been
cancelled.
The secretary of the World Professional Billiards
and Snooker Association, Mike Green, said, "Eddie's
sponsor pulled out, because there was not enough
television coverage and he has not been able to find
a replacement".
Blalock leads Classic
ST PETERSBURG, Florida, Sunday (AAP-Reu
ter). - Jane Blalock posted a 69 yesterday to retain
her lead after 36 holes of the Ladies Professional Golf
Association's Orange Bowl Classic.
Blalock's total of nine-under-par 135 gave her a
three-shot lead over Silvia Bertolaccini.
Newcastle beaten
MELBOURNE: Nunawading Spectres, the cur
rent Australian champions, defeated Newcastle 78-62
in the first round of the National Basketball League
in Melbourne on Saturday night. The man-of-the
match award went to Nunawading captain and centre
player Bill Palmer, who shot 17 points and took 16
rebounds.
World records
NEW YORK, Sunday (AAP-Reuter). - Hurdler
Candy Young, of Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, and
sprinters Chandra Chceseborough, of Tennessee State
University, and Evelyn Ashford, of Los Angeles, set
women's world records for clcctronically-timed races,
and Steve Scott won the men's mile at the US indoor
track and field championship in New York on Friday
night.
