Planning speeds up
for regional centre
The Federal, NSW
and Victorian Govern
ments announced yester
day stepped-up planning
to develop Albury-Wod
onga as Australia's first
legional growth centre.
The first ministerial
council meeting to plan
the development was held
in Alburv yesterday.
In a joint communique
the Commonwealth Mini
ster for Urban and Rec
ional Development. Mr
Uren. .the NSW Minister
for Decentralisation and
Development, Mr Fuller,
and the Victorian Mini
ster for State Develop
ment and Decentralisation,
Mr Byrne, said the pre
liminary study of the
region should be com
pleted and the result ready
for submission to the
three Governments by the
end of June.
Saving the kangaroo
MELBOURNE, Friday.
- The Commonwealth
and the States agreed at a
conference in Melbourne
today to plan to save kan
garoos from extinction.
The conference, chaired
by the Minister for the
Environment and Conser
vation, Dr Cass, decided to
oppose the uncontrolled
shooting of kangaroos and
similar species, but it also
recognised that culling or
harvesting of some .species
might be necessary.
The conference set up a
working party to ascertain
how best to manage and
conserve kangaroos. Dr
Cass said this party's re
port, due in May, could
mean an easing of the ban
on the export of kangaroo
products.

Mrs Cathy Baikas, 27,
returned to Sydney from
Greece today with her
three-year-old daughter.
Maris. The girl dis

as Mrs Baikal estranged
