PROBLEMS FOR
PUNTERS
IN WELTER
SYDNEY, Tuesday.
The Welter Handicap to
be run over six furlongs
at Canterbury tomorrow
provides a problem for
punters as a number of
horses are racing in open
company for the first
time or else resuming
from spells.
Dominion is the logical
pick for the race despite
the fact that he ran last to
Persian Ace in the Roschil!
Welter (740 last Saturday.
Dominion led clearly to
the St Leger and it was
only in the closing stages
that he weakened and was
then cased right up.
Runaway
win
Two starts earlier he
was narowly beaten by
Domino King in a corres
ponding race over this
course.
In the early betting,
Windsor Park, Chrison and
Linden arc sharing favour
itism at 4/1 and Dominion
and Dclrcpar are at 5/1.
But Windsor Park has
not raced for more than a
month, Chrison was beaten
in provincial company re
cently, and Linden is taking
on open company in the
city for the first time.
The Wiley Handicap (91
80yd) should go to the con
sistent Oromedes despite
his weight of 9.9. Orom
odes scored a runaway win
over this course on July 26
and beat Temple Court in
the Randwick Georges
River Handicap (Im).
Then he ran a good third
to Sunshine Sue in . the
Rosehill Handicap (10f)
last Saturday.
Pacific Pearl, to be ridden
' by Gary Moore, appeals
as the best bet of the day
in the Encourage Handicap
(7f 80yd)..
The opposition tomorrow
is very ordinary and
I Pacific Pearl will carry only
7.10 in addition to having
drawn the rails.
There could be a number
iof surprise results in the
five divisions of the Enfield
Maiden (5f) because of the
number of newcomers and
the number of 3-year-olds
who showed potential last
season and are resuming
after winter spells.
The first Enfield Maiden
should go to Wilsight, pro
vided the Smith-trained gal
loper decides to reproduce
the brilliance he displays on
the track.
At his last start Wilsight
crashed over the running
rail at Canterbury and
iockcy George Moore was
badly injured.
Tomorrow Wilsight will
be ridden by Des Lake and
will wear blinkers.
Lake will be a new rider ,
also for the Smith-trained
Wee Smoke in the Second
Enfield Maiden.
Bean Vento looks a
special in the Third Enfield ;
Maiden, following his good
third to Divide and Rule in ;
the Rosehill Three-Year- ,
Old Graduation (7f) last
Saturday week;
The Smith-trained South
Town has not raced since
March but his recent track
trials point to his making a :
bold showing in the Fourth '
Enfield Maiden; - 1
