.North needs joint
effort: Anderson
The development of the Australian north must be a joint effort
between Government and private enterprise, the Minister for Customs
and Excise, Senator Anderson, said at Taralga yesterday.
Senator Anderson wasl
speaking to a conference on
northern development, orga
nised by a Canberra group
interested in progress
throughout northern Austra
lia.
This development must
not be viewed in isolation,
as simply the development
of the Northern Territory or
Queensland, he said.
In many instances, Aus
tralia's development had
been retarded by approaches
which did not look at the
whole future.
The development of
Imincral deposits would give
the initial stimulus to the
formation of large towns in
the north.
"These towns will become
the main centres of the
region", he said, "and no
doubt will stimulate devel
opment to the point where
it becomes self-generating".

Mr Howson said that
throughout the whole of the
area north of the Tropic of
Capricorn, $85 million had
been committed by private
enterprise on development
projects.
In addtion, the Common
wealth had committed $160
million — some on projects
started a few years ago, and
some on others which would
be coming in during the
next few years.
Tfie executive vice-presi-l
dent of the Victorian Em
ployers Federation, Mr S.
Gilmour, said no centre of
population — no matter
how strong the development
of primary production —
could expect to show steady
growth without a range of
industries engaged in secon
dary production.
Industry was a vital ele
ment in the diversification
necessary to provide a range
of jobs suitable for a grow
