WALLSEND COUNCIL,
The Wallsend Council met on Tuesday
evening. There were present ::The.Mayor,
Alderman R. Maddison, and Aldermen
Fryar, 'Watson, Harris, -Davis, Timmins,
Scott, Jones, and Richardson.
Correspondence was dealt with" as fol
lows :
From the Postal and Telegraph De
partment, intimating that the requisite
number of subscribers had not yet been
received for the'proposed telephone, ex
change. Alderman Harris moved that the
council clerk'make further Inquiries con
cerning this matter. Seconded.by. Alder
man Watson, and carried.
Mr. R. Holmes, Mayfield, wrote apply
ing for an omnibus license for the Walls
end-West Wallsend route. This' matter
was left in the hands of the Mayor. and
council clerk.
The Newcastle Council wrote invitipg
representatives to attend a conference to
consider, the provisions of a draft bill for
the establishment of abattoirs, &c. The
Mayor was appointed to attend.
An intimatibn was received fromcthc
Treasury thdt. the balance of special sub
sidy, amounting,,to £63 1Gs Sd, had been
placed to the council's credit.
Reports as to 'the progress\ of work,
&c., during the-fortnight were submitted
by the..overseer,,and inspector. It was
also stated that, a large number of rate
payers had failed to respond in- any way
to the final notices recently. issued' in
connection with the payment of municipal
rates. A. motionwas. carried authorising
the Mayor, to tako'legal action ' against
defaulters in this respect, and'the matter
will be placed in the hands 'of the coun
cil's sdlicitor during-the ensuing week. It
was further decided to take action against
Messrs. W. Hetherington and C. . Rup
reicht for 'causing damage to footpaths
by overflow of surface -water from their
respective premises. '
Accounts for wages and other. services,
amounting to £35 3s id, were passed for
payment.
Alderman Fryar gave a 'report.of the
business transacted at the New Lambton
conference regarding the' extension 'of
municipal boundaries. The method and
effect of the assessment mutually ar
ranged between the council' 'and', the
Wallsend Company' had been ' fully eo
plained. This was regulated by the sell
ing price at the porte of Newcastle, the
basis of assessment, being one penny ,in
the shilling' for round coal, and half this
rate for slack for all coal won within the
borough boundary. A way leave of 2d per
ton round and slack was only received for
coal won beyond the boundaries. This as
sessment covered all lands, plant,'etc., the
property of the company within the bor
ough. The bulk of the coal was now being
got outside the incorporated area, but the.
commencement of operations at the- C. Pit
would materially alter this state of affairs.
He had no doubt, even if all the coal was
won beyond the'borough boundgry, that an
equitable. assessment for lands.. etc., would
be agreed to by the company. The report
was supplemented by the .council'-clerk,
and received as satisfactory, on the motion
of Alderman Harris, sec'onded by Alderman
Jones.
At the instance of Alderman'Scott it was
resolved to request the Railivay Commis
sioners to run a- special -train between
Wallsend and Cockle Creek station on the
King's. Birthday, for the convenience, of
those 'desirous of attehding the '.Cockle.
Creek Boating Club annual regatta. Alder-'
men Harris, Jones, and Fryar spoke in
support, and alluded to the success attend
ing similar-arrangsments on last Anniver
sary Day.
The non-abatement of a nuisance within
the Wallsend Compariy's railway enclosure
at Brookstown was referred to by -Alddr
man Timmins. The council clerk was in
structed to'bring the matter in complaint
under notice of the colliery' manager.
A' meeting of the Wallsed park trusties'
wa's'held at'the conclusion of the'council
business. Mr. E. Henry, principal'Wallsend
SuperiorrPublic School, wrote on'behalf'of
the School Teachers' Tennis'Club,'declin
ing to 'accept the terms offered' by .the
trustees' for the use of'orfe of the courts.
a rent of 5s per week'for tid'or three
nighth, the club to be responsible for'all
repairs, etc. The' writer explained'th4t'it'
was thought the terms' were exqvssive.' At
the instance of the Mayor it..was resolved
to reduce the proposed rent by'2s 6d.per
weelk; other conditions to remain as before
offered.
