Wednesday.
A scene of great confusion occurred i thile
Legislative Assembly to n'ght. An item of
£_750 for gas and watar at Government
House was submitted, and aa amendment
was moved to rtrike it out. After an un.
seemly discuision, thie amendment wap nega.
tived. Then an amendment was moved to
rduce the Public Works Estimates. Messrs.
Bent and Gaunson stroogly snpported it, nod
Mfr. Berry asked if stonewalliug was meant,
for if s> he would take steps to see whether
t~ase hen. members shzuld lie hebard
for the remainder of the session or not.
An offer was mede to test the courage of ihe
'bullying Chief Secretary," and members
were told that what they said wus false.
Major Smith shook his clenched fist across
the table. and thin in the confusion the
gallery was cleared. Fisally progress was
repoeted without much being done.
In the Assembly, this afternoon, private
business was takec, and a long discussion
took place on a resolalion for granting corn.
pensation to sieging masters and teachers who
were dispensed with on "Black Wednesday."
Mr. Berry ultimately promised to conside;r
the matter. On the House going into
Committee of Supply, Dr. Madden submitted
a r?solution that the eight-hours sysatem be
extended to the employees of the Hobscn's
Bay railway. He contended that the men had
longer hours and lesspsy thanmen at Spencer
street. Mr. Berry at first said the time to deal
with the matter was whoa the lines wers
amalgamates; but after the question had
been discussed at somne lmnuth, and a con
siderable amount of warmlth displayed, Mr.
Berry promised all that was contended for.

F. L. Smibh took occasion to apologise for his
hasty conduct when in thebo chair, on Fridaj
morning. The apology was readily accepted.
An officer of the House was deputed to at.
tend the Court on the occasion of insolvency
proceedings against MIr. Dwyer, member for
Villiers ard Heytesbury.

A man answering the description of Evarne,
who shot at constable Monks, was arrested to
danynear Goornong.
A deputation from BelfaIsst to-day urged
the Minister Wrkss that the Government
should take into consideration the harbour
improvements, in accordance with Sir John
Coode's report. It was stated that the sum
of £22,00, would be required. Mir. Patterson
said that large sums had already been spent,
and nothiug further could be gran:ed this
year.
