MR. D. GILLIES.
Mr. Donald Gillies died on February 4
at his residence, "Glen Isla," Regent
street, New Lambton, at the age of 86.
Mr. Gillies had resided in New Lamb-
ton for 70 years, with the exception of
three years spent in Coolgardie during
the gold rush. Born in Ayr, Scotland,
he arrived in Sydney, with his parents
in 1857 in the ship Glen Isle at the age
of 5. His father, the late Mr. Duncan
Gillies, was later the first postmaster
at Bullock Island, now Carrington. Mr.
Gillies followed the occupation of coal
mining till his retirement.
Two sons and three daughters survive
him. They are Messrs. Alex, (Broad
meadow), Thomas Duncan (Waratah),
Mesdames A. E. Davies (Concord), F.
M. Grierson (Coogee), and Miss Mary
Gillies (New Lambton). There are 11
grandchildren and four great-grand-
chiildren. Mr. Gillies' wife died 36 years
ago.
At the funeral Rev. W. Young, of Ham-
ilton Presbyterian Church, held services.
The pall-bearers were the four eldest
grandson Messrs. Donald, Alex, Harry,
and Allan Gillies. The interment was
in the Presbyterian portion of Sandgate
cemetery.
