NEWCASTLE WAITING
Expects Visit-by Minister for
Lands
Opinion in Greater Newcastle Council
circles was that the Minister's statement,
so far as it concerned suggestions of
local differences ahout thle aerodrome site
being cleared up, was unduly optimistic.
It was recalled that, following conten
tious debates in the council some months
ago, a bare majority was secnred for a
resolution wshich set ou a slb-commtittee
to investigate the District Park aero
drome extension scheme. It was assumed
that the Minister's statement contemplated
the possibility of extending District Park.
Tile sub-committee met several times, but
suspended its activities clhen informel
that the Minister for Lands (Air. C. A
Sinclair) proposed to visit the district
in the new year to take a pprsonal m
terest in the project, and to ascertain
what other lasd wouldl be available near
District Park iand elsewhere in tile Greater
Newcastle area for sptorting see.' It eas
agreed that nothing further coull he done
until 'the Minister behad madtle his survey
of tile district. So far no indication hiis
been received of when the tMinister will
come to Newcastle.
The general opinion in couneil circles
was that if the Minister could guarantee
to make adebuate additional sportisne
ground available, mteb of the opposition
to the extension of District Park ero
drome would be removed. Until the Minis.
ter had given his decision, however, rt
would not lie accurate to suggest that
the controvers)y was any nearer solu.
tion.
A further factor is the report whichl, it
is understood, is being prlepared by the
Parks Surveyor (Mr. R. H. Patterson),
This is expected to give a clear indication
of what undeveloped sportilg areas are
available in the Newcastle district.
The opinion that, if a vote were taken
now, a majority of the aldermen would
favour the District Park site was ex
pressed by the Mayoer of Greater Net-.
tastle (Alid. G. W. Jenner). He was con
fident, hue said. that the council would
grasp the opportunity of securing a first
class aerodrome for Neweusile, also to
secure sporting areas for the district. The
aerodrome issue would be one of the
first to be settled when tihe counoil re
suimed.
