NEWCASTLE TOURIST GUIDE.
We have received a copy of the guide
to Newcastle and its neighbourhood,
which has been compiled by Mr. E. J.
Flynn, and issued by the Newcastle and
District Tourist Association. The work,
which comprises 180 pages, 8½, inches
by 5½ inches, is copiously illustrated,
and will serve to disclose many beauty
spots, even to those who think they
know the district well, and will serve
as an admirable souvenir to send to
friends at a distance, and should do
much to attract attention to the dis
trict. The photo-engravings are princi
pally from negatives taken by Mr. Charl
leston, of Hunter-street, Mr. G. H. Daw
kins, of Lambton, and the photographer
attached to the State Intelligence De
partment. They are varied in their se
lection, and well serve to illustrate the
industrial development and natural beau
ties of the district. Mr. Flynn has con
densed a great deal of interesting mat
ter into the space at his command. The
fact that the publication is a guide is
never lost sight of, and the statistical
information is adroitly interwoven into
the descriptive matter. The association
of the letterpress with the illustrations
is well sustained, and together they ad
mirably serve the primary purpose of
the publication. The guide is from the
press of the Federal Printing Works
(Messrs. Davies and Cannington), New
castle, and the production is in every
way creditable. The blocks are clearly
printed on heavy toned paper, the type
has a distinct face, and the whole work
manship serves to materially enhance
the value of the publication.
The death took place at Gilmerton, Scot
land, recently, of Peter Moodie, who saw ser
vice in the Crimea and the Indian Mutiny.
Moodie was a native of Prestonpans, and was
in his seventy-seventh year. He enlisted into
the 71st Regiment of Foot at Edinburgh in
1852, and in the following year sailed for the
Crimea. Here he remained until 1856, when
he embarked for Malta. With the outbreak
of the Mutiny, his regiment was despatched
to India, where he took part in the stirring
events of that time. Moodie held the medal
and clasp far the Crimea, and also the Turk
ish Medal. He was also awarded the follow
ing honours:- Indian Mutiny medal and
clasp. Indian Mutiny and clasp for Umballa,
and good conduct medal.
