Road Tax Plan to
Help Councils
The Minister for Transport (Mr.
O'Sullivan) advised Mr. G. Booth,
M.L.A., that he had submitted to
Cabinet certain proposals covering
bus routes wholly or partly within
the area included in the Metro
politan and Newcastle transport dis
tricts.
The proposals included amending
legislation to provide for the rate
of motor tax for vehicles fitted with
compression ignition engines to be
double that of petrol-driven vehicles,
and for Department of Main Roads
to forgo its share of such tax and
service licence fees payable on
buses.
The Minister said adoption of
the proposals would considerably
increase contributions received by
Lake Macquarie Shire Council,
which had asked for financial aid
to maintain and construct roads
traversed by buses. This matter
generally was investigated recently,
and he hoped to have Cabinet con
sideration of his proposals expedited.
