Two Queensland
Cities Swept By
Wind, Hailstorms
BRISBANE, Sunday.-Seventy miles
an hour gusts of wind were recorded
in a storm which swept Rockhampton
this afternoon.
About the same time a storm which
yielded hail the size of cricket balls,
cut through a narrow strip in south
east Queensland.
Rockhampton'. storm broke about
4.45 o'clock.
The steel floodlight towers at the
Rtugby League's ground were bent by
a gttst of wisntl.
Flying iron and falling trees caused
light andt power failures. To-night
half the city was in darkness.
Wind whipped up the Fitzroy River
and many small craft dragged their
anchors.
At Langley, near Rockhamlpton, gal
vanised iron torn from a roof was
wrapped around poles. Electricity and
telephone lines were severetd.
Thdmas Edward Roser, 67, of Rock
hampton, fell while trying to replace
galvanised iron on his roof. He re
ceived headt injutries and shock.
The storm in south-eastern Queens
land broke at Beaudesert and Veres
dale between 3 and 4 o'clock.
It swung away from Brisbane, but
swept Ipswich. 22 miles distant, with
heavy hail.
