THE, REDUCTION !
THE PRICE OF THE MERCURY
' 'T0 i I
ONE PENNY.
fír ANNOUNCEMENT ,,
EXTRAORDINARY "*»
Tho spirit of the age, in Australasia
as elsewhere, is clearly in favour of cheap
nowspapcrs The Argus, which long
maintained its price at 2d por copy, has
lately been reduced to Id , and this
example has affected so conservative a
paper as tho Sydney Morning Herald
Tho reason for the reduction in price in
both these cases ts a desire to reach the
largo masses of roidcrs in tho cotouics,
so that the influence of tho papers may
bo extended, and the public may have
the bonofit o! the oarofnllv compiled
news and carefully considered articles
for which both these leading journals
are so well known Having been, by
these changes, led to consider this
question of price, and its effects on
the popularity of a leading newspaper,
the proprietor of The Mercury baa
reached the conclusion that he, too,
should follow what ia oalled the spirit
of the age, and be hu deoided to
rednee the prloe of The Mercury to
that of the other leading continental
journals, and with this change all lead-
ing papers of Australia will be issued
at a uniform price of one penny.
In carrying out this resolve, he will at
the outset, no doubt, expérience some |
loss, as it can hardly be expected that
the increased circulation will at once
compensate for the lower price He
has, however, from what has »"ready
been learned on the subject, and judging
by tho experience of others, every reason
to believe that the ultimato rosults will
fnllj show tho wisdom of the change
to bo mado, because an increased-and
he expects a largely increased-circula-
tion will greatly add to the influence of
tho paper, by giving a moro extended
circulation to the carefully considered
comments on puvlio affairs for which
J he Mercury has, he may fairly ray,
g unod a not inconsiderable reputation
lu making those commiuta it is often
nccesstry to n buko crude enthusiasm
and clearly ^¡"upjdied endo vour, but <~
lt will be found, lu the futuro us in the
past, that no movement for tho welfare
of the community will fail to recen o a
generous support m these columns
Naturally, uu incrcuecd circulatiin, in
tho helping on of wh ch be may fairly
ask the assistance of many friends, will
lead to a greater valuo being git en to
advertisers, whose lntcrcats will be j
sen ed by their advertisements coming j
under the notice of a larger number of
rt adere
A chango of this kiud will entail a
great deal of preliminary work and re
arrangement of commercial matters,
which will require some little lune to
complete, consequently the proposed
alteration »ill bo delayed a few weeks,
but it is thought dcsirablo to give the
earliest intimation of tho reduction
It is proposed that tho reduction shall
come into force cn and aftor
