INTERESTING STATISTICS.
Interviewed In Sydney by a Daily Telegraph
Exporter, Mr. -James Millis, tnt-v-in-rlng director of
the Union Steamship Co., gave some statistics
that are worth reproducing. When all
our ships are in commission. he said, " we
employ afloat 710 persons, and our monthly
wages payment runs to something like £15,000.
In addition, of course, we have an army ashore
in various capacities officers, mechanics, coal
labourers, and so on. Our vessels steamed
'during the last 12 months over 1,81X1,000
arisen, with a total consumption of 170 000
tons of coal, and in I hot period we
carried no less than 160 000 passengers. For
the San Francisco steamers alone give purchase

Mr. Mills points out that when the Australian
