Minister Asked
for Statement
on Cousens Case
CANBERRA. Friday.--oVhen Mr.
Spender (Lib., N.S.W.), in the:House
of Representatives to-day, asked the
Miinister for the Army (Mr. Cham
bers) to make a statement giving the
reasons for the cancellation of the
commission of Major Cousena. other
Ministers cautioned Mr. Chambers to
"be careful."

tion be placed on the notice paper.
Mr. Spender said that because of
intense public interest in the Cou
esons case and statemments by three
of hisienior officers that they had no
doubt as to his loyalty, a statement
should be made as to why lhi com
miEsion was cancelled. The statement
,hould also exnlain whether it was
a result of evidence other than that
civen at the preliminary hearing of
the treason charge preferred against
him.
