SRI LANKA
Reports
to be
censored
COLOMBO, Thurs-
day (Router). — All re-
ports of proceedings in
Sri Lanka's Parliament
are to be censored from
today.
The Speaker, Mr
E. L.Senanayake, told
Parliament that reports
by foreign as well as lo-
cal journalists would be
censored by a commit-
tee appointed by the As-
sembly.
The Government be-
gan censoring reports in
the local media three
weeks ago, when vio-
lence flared against a
peace accord with India
aimed at ending the
Tamil rebellion.
Reports of foreign
correspondents, other
than those relating to
Parliament, are still ex-
empt from censorship.
Parliament had on
earlier occasions en-
forced censorship on lo-
cal as well as foreign
reporters when violence
erupted.
Mr Senanayake an-
nounced the move
when MPs began dis-
cussing a motion to ex-
tend for a further month
a nationwide slate of
emergency.
No reason was given
for introducing censor
ship of parliamentary
proceedings.
