EMPIRE LEADERS IN
GOLF MATCH
Mr. Bruce Plays With
Sir John Simon
LONDON, September 7.-Australia's
High Commissioner (Mr. S. M. Bruce),
with a handicap of seven, and Sir
ohn Simon, with a handicap of 11,
nished all square in the first round
today of the Jubilee Vase tournament
conducted by the Royal and Ancient
Club at St. Andrews. As halved
matches count as wins, Mr. Bruce and
Sir John Simon have entered the
second round.
They have frequently played golf
together when on holidays in the
Riviera.
Commenting on today's play, "The
Times" says that a large gallery at the
match was well rewarded. The
players were all square at the seven
teenth tee, where Mr. Bruce missed
his drive. He nearly won the hole with
his second stroke-which made Sir
John leap like an Olympic jumper to
avoid being hit-and found the bunker
with his third, from which he made a
magnificent recovery, reaching the
green.
Sir John meanwhile was well placed
in two, but missed his third, and even
tually took seven to get down, and Mr.
Bruce, holing his putt, won a hole that
looked hopelessly lost.
Sir John made ample amends at the
home hole with a four, which Mr.
Bruce could not equal.
