Why Bar.maid
Pays More
For Stockings
SYDNEY.-As frocks had become
shorter since the war, barmaids
had to wear more expensive stock
ings, Mr. Ryan (for the Liquor
Trades Employes' Union) said in
the Arbitration Court yesterday.
The union is seeking a 10/ a
week increase for bar employes in
New South Wales. Barmaids now
receive £3/8/6 and barmen £4/18/
a week.
"If frocks were ankle length
again, barmaids would not have to
wear these stockings, which cost
between 8/ and 10/ a pair." said
Mr. Ryan.
Judge O'Mara-Why must they
wear the expensive kind? That
part of them is not on display. is
it?
Mr. Ryan-There is a lot of
movement. The barmaids must be
neat and well dressed. They have
to spend money for permanent
hair waves and to buy foundation
garments, to maintain their
figures.
Judge O'Mara-They have al
ways worn foundation garments,
haven't they?
Mr. Ryan--I am saying that
these factors did not get proper
consideration by the court when
the award was made.
