Training scheme
for Aborigines
The Government has given $426,859 to a pro
gram aimed at bringing Aborigines into the ACT
tourism industry, the Minister for Employment and
Industrial Relations, Mr Willis, and the Minister
for Territories, Mr Scholcs announced yesterday.
Mr Willis said the Aboriginal Trainee Tourist
Ofliccr Program would give 12 young Aborigines
on-the-job work experience and ofT-thc-job training
in the tourism industry.
The program will be coordinated by the Can
berra Tourist Bureau and the ACT Regional Tour
ism Industry Training Committee.
Mr Willis said the Australian tourism industry
had long used the unique attraction of Aboriginal
culture in its promotions but few Aborigines
worked in the industry.
Mr Scholcs said the program would benefit the
Aboriginal community and the short-staffed tour
ism industry.
Trainees completing the two-year coursc will be
awarded certificates.
Land claims at risk
Eurobodalla Shire Council should rcject eight
out of nine Aboriginal land claims in the Bodalla
area for environmental reasons, a report from the
shire's town planning department says.
The claims to be considered at today's council
meeting lie between Tuross and Birroul Lakes on
vacant Crown land close to the waterfront and
include wetlands, dunes and coastal land.
The ninth claim does not front the bcach, is
partially clcarcd and has an access road. The report
said this was in accordnce with council's planning
scheme.
