Stanley broke Peter
Thomson's course re
cord with a 7-under-par
66 at The Lakes yester
day, giving him a two
stroke lead over Rodger
Davis with a 10-under
par 136 in the $20,000
Caltex Festival of Syd
ney Open.
Davis raccd through the
first nine holes in an as
tounding 30 then he
finished with a 68 after
dropping a stroke at the
final hole.
Four strokes further
back on 142 were Greg
Norman and Chris
Mellish, who both shot a
69.
Stanley has not scored a
bogey and he has notched
an eagle and eight birdies
in the first two days.
But the 29-year-old Vic
torian has not won a tour
nament since the Gilbcy's
South Seas Classic in Fiji
in September, 1976.
Stanley passed Davis
yesterday with a display
which included an cagic
and five birdies.
He turned in 33, thrce
under the card, and
salvaged a par out of the
bushes at the 10th by hol
ing a putt from 4 metres.
Stanley birdicd the 11th
and posted an eagle at the
par-5 14th.
Davis' six birdies and
three pars for an outward
run of 30 is the lowest front
nine ever recorded at the
course.
