POSSIBLE BIG ADVANCE
Talks in Peking
TOKYO, T u e s d ay j
(AAP). — The unusual
length .and the language
used to describe the
meeting of the US Secre
tary of State, Dr Kissin
ger, yesterday with
Chairman Mao, appear
to presage an important
advance in US-China re?
lations, Associated Press
reported.
What this will be re
mains a secret. It could
be long predicted diplo
matic recognition or, as a
major preliminary to this,
the withdrawal of the
9,000 American troops
stationed in Taiwan.
That Dr Kissinger met
the 79-year-old Chairman
Mao at all is regarded as
significant. Chairman
Mao's audiences generally
are reserved for,Heads of
State or, as in the case of
Dr Kissinger's last en
counter, in February, to
give official sanction to a
new agreement.
In that case, it was to
approve the establishment
of Chinese and American
liasion offices, one; stepi
short of outright diplo
matic recognition.
In February, Dr Kis
singer talked with Chair
man Mao for slightly less
than two hours. Yester
day's meeting went on
for 2} hours.

these meetings are care
fully chosen. They indic

success.
In February the talks
were called "frank and
wide ranging" in "an un
constrained atmosphere".
Yesterday's announce
ment went a long step
forward in saying tho con
versation was "on a wide
range of subjects in ■ a
friendly atmosphere".
This was the phraseol
ogy used for the October
IB meeting of the Can
adian Prime Minister, Mr
Trudeau and Chairman
Mao.
Canada has full diplo
matic relations with
China.
Dr Kissinger is on his
sixth visit to Peking and
is expected to leave to
