BRIGHT START
L. V. Pellew Bats Well
ONE OF STATE'S BEST
"Why, he's only a boy!" The lady in
the grand stand was surprised as L. V.
(Pellew led North Adelaide to the wic
kets against University on Saturday.
Fair-headed Lance Pellew looks but a
boy, but he has proved his cricketing
prowess without a doubt, and his
bright 44 on Saturday, which he rattled
together in 42 minutes, was one of the
features of the 'Varsity match.

Supporters went to cricket expecting
to find small scores. It was in accord
ance with the game. But they were sur
prised. For the opening day and the
wickets, which if good were a trille
slow, the talies were of the best.
His first season for North Adelaide.
it was a coincidence that Pellew should
play his opening match against his old
team. He played bright cricket, too,
and although he was dropped twice
it was good to see that the young in
terstater did not adopt stonewalling tac
tics. To Gun gor the first over he wasi
quiet, and when Ohlstrom took a hand
Pellew extended a chance with his score
only 1.
It was not accepted. From then ono
Pellew gave a capital display, playing
sound cricket. Only now and then did
he hit a somewhat weak shot. He
reached the boundary five times, and
his display, in conjunction with Lewis,
was top of the batting averages last
reason, put North Adelaide supporters
on good terms with themselves.

luch innings as that of Pellew on
Saturday promises well for the comingj
aon. A flrA field and a bright bat. he
is one of the State's best at the present
time. It was also a coincidence on Sat
urday that when missd at 1 and at 32
it was by IKrantz on eachl occasion.

A bright innings closed when Pellew
scooped one up to Fuller off Tom Finey'R
second over. But North Adelaide have
many other good men in addition to
Pellew, and on appearances they should
prove to be a fine combination this sea
son.
With "Nip" Pellew in their ranks and
the assistance of Lance, there is every
reason for thinking that North Adelaide
will be knocking for entrance into the
big four when the summer pastime is
further addvanced, . . _ .
