H.ow to Keep ome "'Dow
Son the Farm" in S.A.
MELBOURNE, Today.
WTHE-problem.of how to keep our
women down on the farm after they
have seen the city has been solved in
South Australia, according to the State
Leader of the Opposition (Mr. Butler).
He said today that the farmers in the
district he represented in Parliament had
discovered that if they gave their women
folk a personal financial interest in the
farm, the drudgery and seclusion were
Sborne uncomplainingly.
One farmer's wife took as "Din" money
to profits from a dairy herd and the
poultry, and over a number of rood years
she amassed £2,000. and when droughts
came she was able to finance her husband
over the critical period.
There was also he said, the case of a
doctor's secretary,. who came from London
and married a South Australian farmer.
She was appalled at the loneliness of the
farm. But her husband made her the
pronrietress of the cows: pigs. and
chickens. and she is now a model of what
a contented country housewife should be.
