Award Rates of Pay
WV. J. Hancock, Camden:-Wherever -1
go I hear the cry that employers have
work to be done, but they cannot afford to
pay the award rates which are often more
than the work is worth.
Recently I went to MIorphettville,
Clarendon, and Morphett Vale in a vain
search for work. 1 spent a night in a
shed without blankets. I came across
four men making a road under contract to
a district council. When I asked for a
job I learned that so far each man had
earned only 13/ a day. If they employed
another they would be obliged to pay
the award rate, which was more than
they were receiving for themselves.
If the law which fixed the wages is not
able to find work for those unemployed
why does it make a rate which is so high
that it is beyond the ability of employers
to pay it? If money is scarce, could not
tlie Government or the larger employers
supply more work, and pay partly by post
dated negotiable orders?
There are many of the unemployed who
would much rather work than receive
charity, and would work for even less
than the award rate.
