RAILWAY FIREMAN DEAD
Body Pinned by Engine

I The body of a railway fire
man, named Tuck, has been
located under the locomotive
which toppled 20 ft. down a
bank into a creek, as the result
of a washaway during the
floods on Tuesday night and
Wednesday.
Parts of the engine will have to be
icut away with an oxy-acetylkne plant
before the dead man can be removed.
The enginedriver is in hospital suffer
ing from severe shock. He applied the
brakes approaching the washawa-, but
thlese could not hold back the engine
owing to the load behind. The .engine
still lies in the deep water of the creek,
and it will be some days before it can
be recovered.
The freight train was travelling north
to Oamarnu, and traffic on that line is
disorganised.
Repairs to burst sewers and water mains
in Dunedin are likely to occupy some time.
Goangs of men are wor king overtime to
get the systems in normal condition.
The floods which deluged the city have
almnost subsided. Workmen are busy
clearing the silt from houses and streets.
Three substantial footbridges over the
Leith River have been washed away. The
Leith is not a long river, but after heavy
rain it resembles a mountain torrent, then
being one of the fastest streams in the
Dominion.
During the 24 hours of.recent heavy ram
11 in. were recorded in the upper reaches
of the river.
