RELIEF FOR WORKLESS
- . . . .
LParliamet May Assemble Early
S:CONSIDERATION BY :GOVERNMENT
S:The. Governmenti has given careful consideration to the
question of reopening Parliament at an early date to deal with
the subject of providing work for the uneniIloyed, the Hon R.
L. Butler (Premier) stated today.
The Premier said that he had noticed
a report that it was probable that a reso
lution would be adopted by the Par!
liamentary Labor Party requesting the
Government to summon Parliament at an
early date to deal with the unemployment
problem and other urgent matters.
Tile Government last year, he said, called
Parliament together early in May withi the
object of obtaining approval for the loan
expenditure for the next financial year.
That procedure, although it had not met
with the general approval of the Labor
Party, had enabled the Government to
undertake works at an earlier date than
would have been possible if the loan esti
mates and loan expenditure had been
passed at the customary time.
It had also given the Government oppor
tunity to apportion the work throughout
the year to the advantage of those em
ploycd. So far as' this year was con
cerned, Cabinet had been most carefully
considering whether it would not be advis
able again to reopen Parliament at
a,, early date. Contrary to-the usual
practice, he had asked the variouls depart
ments to prepare their loan estimates so
that the Government could consider what
necessary and essential works could be
started in the ensuing financial year.
Those Ilan estimates had been now re
ceived, and would be completed within
about three. weeks, when the Cabinet
would decide whether, by getting the ap
proval of Parliament with a view to find
ing employment, for the workless, such
works gould be started immediately in the
new financial year.
