Salation. Army Procession
AUCKLAND (N.Z.), Today.
Newspapers are filled with protests
against a procession through the streets
of Auckland planned by the Salva.
tion Army to mourn the sinfulness
of the city.
The "Funeral March" was to have
been played, but the proposal to do so
has been dropped, as it was feared that
disorderly scenes would, result.
It is generally considered that tihe
action of the Army is an insult to the
city, as the pleasures of. the people of
Auckland are quite harmless. Tlhe Army
had arranged for bands in the procession
to play the "Funeral March," but suitable
Ihymns have been substituted.
If the "Funeral MIareh" lhad been included
disorderly.spenes may have resolted. Many
newspaper correspondents consider that the
money spent in= mouvrning. Qbes wou!d be
better devoted to he'ijiimg the poor.
Indignation at first arose, but it is .now
turning to amusement, and it is expected
that lively scenes will be caused by thl
procession. The mayor'has insisted that
there shall- be no dislocation of traffic. i
Commissioner James Hay, of the Salva
tion Army, replying .to criticism, pointed
out that no objection had been taken to
carrying' the Host through' the streets at
the Eucharistic Congress .to be held in
Sydney.
