MR. RICHARDS ON TAXATION
:"Colossal Failure" Feared
Mr. R. 8. Richards, M.P. (Acting
Leader of the Opposition) stated today
that the Premier could not evade his
responsibilities by seeking advice from the
Opposition. The matters referred to by
him were the responsibilities of the Gor
ernment at the time he assured the coun
try that hlie would balance the Budget,
provide constant employment, increase pro
duction, embark on a. vigorous policy of
land settlement, and even reduce taxa
tion.
"There has been no added responsibili
ties on the lines mentioned by the Pre
mier since hlie assumed office," said Mr.
Richards, "consequently these items must
have been taken into consideration by him
in 'preparifig last year's Estimates when
he presented his Budget to the House.
"The Premier has failed to give effect
to his promises. His action in accepting
the financial, agreemnt, ivlhich wis hailed
as the salvation of the. finances, of the
State. has brought him disaster. HIis
administration has been a cdlossal failure."
The above statement of M:r. Richards is
in reply to one by the Premier published
on Page 10 under the heading "Burden of
Taxation."
