Inventor of Reaping Machine
S. Parsons, Adelaide:-"The News" of
Monday reported that the candelabrum
presented to the late John Ridley by old
colonists is on view at the premises
of Messrs. Stevenson Bros., Rundle street,
before it is deposited in the Museum.
It may be interesting to note that yes
terday in looking through some of the
Ridley letters in my possession I
discovered the following official notifica
tion to Ridley from the Colonial Secre
tary, dated February 21, 1846:--"I am
directed by the Lieutenant-Governor to
inform you that His Excellency has
received a despatch from Lord 8tanley
acknowledging the receipt of plans and
a description of the reaping and thresh
ing machine invented by you, and stating
that Her Majesty and Prince Albert, to
whom these papers were submitted by His
Lordship, were pleased to express their
admiration of the invention.
"His Lordship has also forwarded your
papers to the Royal Agricultural Society
and the Board of Trade."
