A mild sensation was caused before the
-beginning of the annual track and fieldi
games championship meetinr at Norwovi
Oval this afternoon when it was learned
that Hedley Toms. holder of the Stati
220 yards championship, wome not dcfeni
his title. Toms was also the holder of
the State 100 yards title until last Sat
urday, when he was defeated out of a
place in the final.
The Western Australia, G. Appleton,
who won the 100 yards championship last
week. had an easy wiD in his heat of tlhe
220 yards title race. defeating E. N. How
ard, the runner-up last year, by three
yards in 23 1-1i0 cec.
Other goodt perforonmances were regis
I tered by W. Carney and C. Hughes in
