Scientists are
upset by
refusals
The council of the Australian Academy
of Science is disappointed that no action has
been taken to establish the proposed Govern
ment machinery for advice on national scientific
matters.
This disappointment is ex
pressed in the council's
annual report for the year
ended March 31.
It said that during the
year the council had re
ceivetl replies from the
Primo Minister to several
submissions.
The plan, to establish a
museum of Australian bio
logy and the preparation
of a flora of Australia was
rejected.
So was a. proposal for a
broad national scheme of
post-doctoral and senior
fellowships, but the Prime
Minister had pointed ■ out
that the recently-instituted
Queen Rlizabeth II Fellow
shops went some way to
wards filling this need.
The report said the pro
posal for the provision of
rocket facilities for upper
atmosphere research had
largely been met, although
the scheme was limited to
existing or projected re
sources available to (he De
partment of Supply.
The council hoped that
when the government mach
inery for advice was set up,
it would be posible to recon
sider some of its submis
sions.
The report said the
academy's funds on June 30
last year had totalled
$500,268.
