NIORTHBOROUGQH INJ
HANDICAP
Win for Soutane (£2f8/-)
at Murray Bridge
FALLS IN STEEPLECHASE
i MURRAY BRIDGE, Saturday.
Northborough showed a return to form when he
defeated Norade and Tripedy in the Jenkins Handicap today..
In the Glen Lossie Novice Hunters' Steeplechase
SCevantes jumped the wing of the first of the stand double.
He carried Court Jester with him, and ,that horse somer
saulted over the rail.
Conditions were good for the meeting
of the Miurray Bridge Hunt Club this?
afternoon. and there was a sati~sfactory
:ttendance.
Soutane was made favorite for tihe
Novice Race of six furlongs, and, jumping
away from the barrier snarttly, won well
Soutane wa~ a little unluc'ky to have
been defeated by 2Namolis at Victoria Park
last Saturday. That race was over a miie
and a quarter. Although the distance to
dagy was much shorter, Soutane showed
that he had most pace, and the fur-i
ther they went the further Boutane left!
his Ipursuers behind.
DThannita, who chased Sonane home, was
a long way back in the early staeCs, and.
she finished well enough to indicate that
she will win races for her owner-trainer.
Mr. E. Baker. Nonedia was always well
placed, but another well-supported candi-!
date, Kostia. did not have the best of
Inuk in running, and was earest at the
JfinishDGE D.LAYED
JUDGE DELAYED
The judge (Mr. R. Howie) was in~olved
in a co.ision with a motor cyclist on the
way down from Adelaide. The cyclist
sustained injuries to a leg, and the acci
dent delayed' Mr. Howie. who did not
take' his place in -the box for .the first
race. Mr. A. Treloar acted in his stead.
FAVORITE WINS
King; Bridge and Cevantes, who are
both trained biy T. O'Dea. were the only
runners supported seriously in the Gleni
Lossie Novice Hunters' Steeplechase. Ce
vantes fell, but King Bridge won stylishly
from Bounty Silver and Master Comique.
There was a sensational incident in
front of the stand. Cevantes, who had i
just taken charge, ran down the first of
the stand double End jumped the wing.
He carried Court Jester with him, and!
the horse turned a somersault over the
pcotecting rail at the end of the jump.
Mir. A. Buckerfield, rider of Court Jcs
ter, had a heavy fall, and, although Cc
vantes scrambled over the wing, his rider,
iMr. W. McCarron. was shaken from. the
saddle.
The mishap left Kinr Bridge in chage.,
and Mlr. K?;. Best was content to let the!
fa orite canter along in front Bu1t this
nearly brought about his defeat. At thei
two jumps up the hill King Bridge jumped i
stickily, and Bounty Silver got fairly close
to him at the last jump. But KingJ
Bridge had plenty in reserve, and won
easily.
Although King Bridge did not defeat
anything of much account today, he
showed that he has pace. is an acc~om
plished jumner, and can stary. He should
be heard of later in open company,.
NORTHBOROUGH WINS
The Jenkins Hiandicap,. of a mxie and
a quarter, wa~s thought tc be a match
between Income and Meiranous. but the
tacties of J. WV. liyan on Tripedy and
G. Carthy on Ashridge u.ct the calcula.
.tions of backers. When the barrier rose.,
Ashridge and Tripedy dashed away with
a long lead, and in the early stagea the
only runner able to keep within touch
of them was Norade.
At the half-mile post Tripedy. Ashridce.
and Norade must have been at least a
dozen len.ths ahead of their nearest
pnrsuer. Northborough, while Melanous
and Income were in a honeles position.
orade, who was ridden b, F. Cameron,
turned into the strairb with the race
alarently won.
S. Dodd, on Northbow?t nh. ured !ids
mount along, and, catching Norade a few
vards from the p-ost. Northboronr h ron.
This is the first success of Northboirongh
for tome months. His last outing was in
the Strathalbyr Welter, in which he bled.
Northboronah has rood metropolitan form
to his credit, and now that he has brolken
throuch he should ro on and win more
races.
Income. who was ridden br T O'Dea.
inn., seemed to be hamrered by his
wrei-rit. and. even over the last Conle of
fnrlongs. did not aa!lop with an. dash.
SECOND GUN EASILY
The Murray Bridge Hunt Club Cup
of three miles was won by Sec?nd Gun,
whose rider. MIr. W. Me~Carron. had a
fall earlier in the day off Cevantes. The
veteran Adon drew out with a long lead
over the first mile. and apart from Sport
ing Kinz he was about a furlona in front
of the rest of the field.
However. Adon tired, and a mile from
home he hit heavily, and lost his rider.
Oi'er the last rnnd Sportinz King, See
end Gun. and Wonrala were the onl
three clft with a chance.
Sportinz Kina knocked up badlyr and.
although Woncala got fairly close to
Second Gun in the straight. the are!
Wee Gun geuding finished too strongly
for him. The veteran Dez ran olff earl:y
in the race.
SOUTANE BEATEN
Soutune, who was saddled up again,
was made favorite for the Ladies' Brace
let. but the Denacre gelding failed to run
out the mile, and Lord Preston won from
Hindoo Pistol, with Soutane in third
piace.
Turning into the stra-ight Soutane amp
peared to be going easily in front, but
Lord Preston ranged alongside shortly af
tern-wards and the favorite stoppedl badly.
and Hindoo Pistol camne with a late run
to cut him out of second place.
Lord Preston. who is by Prestonarange
from Maraiees Day. was tihe medinm of a
mild betting plunge at Tattersalls meeting
aist Saturday. Although he did not hare
the best of luck in running in that event
he finished third to Namolis and So-
tine
DOUBLES TOTE
There were 695 tickets, representing
£173 15!. taken out on the doubles .tote,
which was conducted on the Jenkins Han
dicap and the Ladies' Bracelet at Murray
Bridge this afternoon. Of the total, 13

leg. and of these 40 were exchanged for
