COLDEST OF
THE YEAR
ADELAIDE 37.5
THIS MORNING
State Record
No wonder we shivered this morn
lug. It was Adelaide's coldest morn
ing of the year, and the coldest June
or July morning for 14 years. The
temperature was 37.5 deg.-24.6 (ldeg.
o0i the grass.
But even that was nothing compared
with the record established at 'ongala
yesterday. The town is already noted
for its temperature extremes, but the
rrass temperature in the early hours of
Sunday was the lowest ever recorded in
the State. It was 20½ deg. below freez
ing.
The temperature was 11.5 deg. above
zero. but in the air it was 21-far above
the minimum of 12.9 recorded at Yongala
on June 30 last year.
THERMOMETER IN ICE
It is remarkable that it was colder in
Adelaide this .morning than at Stirling
West, high up in the hills. The Govern
ment Meteordlogist (MIr. Bromley) attri
buted this to a difference in air move
ments. Adelaide's minimum was touched
at 5 a.m., and the unfortunate officer who
had to read the grass thermometer re
ported that the instrument was encased
in ice and had to be scraped.
MIr. Bromley said that although frosts
were not welcomed by market gardeners,
they did not do much harm, as theplants
were now hardy enough to withstand
them. Frosts hardened and chilled the
ground, thus retarding the germination
and development of shoots from seeds.
The frost at Yongala on Sunday was
most severe, but no. reports of "burning"
were received.
Rain is still needed urgently in the
agricultural districts and to a lesser de
gree in the pastoral areas. Reports from
Western Australia and the head of the
Bight show the development of a cyclonic
disturbance. which promises unsettled
weather and perhaps rain.
