Rattle That
Made Racehorse
Win in a CanterI:
LONDON,- August 12.-A rattle which
was formerly used to urge the racehorse
Ballv- Scanlon to vicfbry;, has re-ap
peared with portentous consequenceS,
says the "Daily I Mail." ;A trainer,
Hedges, finding that: a horse named
Sjeed On was difficult to persuade to
give' of his best when racing, thought
df Bally Scanlon's rattle, which he had
kept as a memento.
The use of the rattle resulted in
Speed On winning a race at Folkestone
in a canter, and as a result the stewards
summoned Hedges and questioned him
about the legality of the gadget.
Hedges pointed out that a jockey wa's
permitted to carry a whip or a substi
tute for that. and added that a -rattle
was more humane than a whip. -
Hickey, Speed On's jockey, was called
in,- and he gave a demonstration with
the rattle. The stewards smiled,- but
decided to submit the problem and-the
rattle to the Jockey Club.
Hedges has written a letter to the
Jockey Club pleading for the return of
the rattle because of its-sentimental
value.
