About Australia
SYDNEY. Friday.
SDr. Makrie Bentivoglio goes the
honor of being the first woman
to lecture on Australia to mem
bers of the National Geographic
Society of America, at Washington.
"Introducing Australia." was the title
of her subject. and so interested were
the 4,000 that filled the society's lecture
hal! that she has been invited to give
another lecture on Australia, in Novem
ber.
Dr. Bentivoglio left for a tour of the
United States early in January, with
the idea of lecturing and visiting those
areas which are geographically similar
to Australia.
Before her departure she was on the
staff of the Teachers' College. and is
vice-president of the Geographical So
ciety of New South Wales. She has
made a special study of Australia, hav
ing travelled 18,000 miles over the con
tinent to gain first-hand knowledge of
her subject.
Writing to members of her family, Dr.
Bentivoglio states that the American
Ipeople have been most hospitable, and
that they are keenly interested in Aus
tralia. While in Washington she in
terviewed President Roosevelt, to
whom she was introduced by the British
Ambassador.
NEW ENGLAND TOUR
During her tour of New England Dr.
Bentivoglio was entertained at Rad
cliffe, Holyoke, Wellesley, and Smith's
Colleges, and was much impressed by
the likeness of the students to those
at Oxford.
At the University of Minnesota, at
Minneapolis, she gave a course of lec
tures on Australia.
On her way from New York to Los
Angeles. where she was a guest and lec
tured at the annual conference of
American Women Graduates. Dr. Benti
voglio visited the Grand Canyon and
the settlements of the Pueblo Indians
near Santa Fe.
At present Dr. Bentivoglio is on her
way to Europe, and will return to
the United States at the beginning of
October, to give further lectures.
TMELBOURNE, Friday.--The Acting
Attorney-General (Senator Brennan)
said today that there was no truth in
the statement that the Chief Justice of
the High Court (Sir Frank Gavan
Duffy) had resigned from the Bench
and that Sir John Latham had been i
appointed to the position.
