MELBOURNE, Sunday.
Marcus D. Beresford, a resident of
Preston, has offered £1.000. provided
£9,000 is subscribed by the public, towards
building a new wing to the St.
Vincent's Hospital. 5
Joseph Henry Grey, solicitor, of Geelong,
whose alleged irregularities exceed
£11,000, and who was arrested in Suva,
Fiji, arrived by express this morning
from Sydney, having reached there by
the s.s. Birksgate from Suva.
The missing fishing boat Elsinore is
reported off Queenscliff, all well., The
crew complain that their calling at a
Tasmanian port was not reported to Victoria,
especially after the disastrous
storm which prevailed in the Straits.
Had the Elsinore arrival there been reported,
the friends of those on board
would have been saved much anxiety.
Weather last night and to-day
showery. Soaking rain set in this afternoon,
and continued late into the night.
The rainfall has extended well into the
country.
At the Princess Theatre last night,
Mr. Lempriere Pringle, the Tasmanian
basso, appeared in "Faust," and sang
the music of the part of Mephistopheles
with a grandly dramatic effect, stirring
the enthusiasm of the audience to a
very pronounced extent.
Mr. A. W. Graf, J.P., of Hillside,
near Corowa, died on Saturday afternoon
of dysentery. He was a native of
Tasmania, being a son of Mr. Graf, of
Bagdad. He settled at Corowa about
four years ago, and took a prominent
part in local affairs.
A body of police, sixty strong, made a
raid at 1 o'clock this morning on a
building in a lane off Little Bourke
street, and arrested 100 persons, who
were found on the premises, and charged
them with a breach of the gaming
law.
The cricket premiership for the sea-
son and championship has been won by
the East Melbourne Cricket Club. This
club has now won the premiership three
times in four years.
The celebration of the 45th anniversary
of the eight hours' movement was
commenced on Saturday, in the
Friendly Societies' Grounds, and will
be continued to-morrow, which has been
declared a public holiday. The
sports yesterday included bicycle
and foot races. The chief bicycle race
was the five miles international
scratch, which was won by Wm. Martin
in 1min. 34 2-5sec, D. J. Walker and
W. G. Symonds dead heat second place ; I
half-mile handicap foot race, won by W. T
McManus from scratch, in the remarkably
fast time of train. 583-5sec.
