AtoliPs~da Resorts Are
Refusing Gaiests
South Australian holiday resorts, flooded with re
quests for Christmas accommodation because of travel
restrictions, are being forced to refuse many applicantsi
because of domestic staff shortages.
rTHE Mayor of Victor Harbor
(Mr. Bruce) said todav it wasj
no exaggeration to say that 20 or1
30 times the number of bookings'
could be taken in his district if
hotels and guest homes had the
staff to handle the work. He knew
one proprietor who had refused
hundreds of guests, and this wasi
only one example of the position
created by the impossibility of ob
taining staff.
The Port Noarlunga Hotel can
not take any more guests over the
Christmas period. The staff posi
tion there is bad. but the proprie
tor's family is coping with the
work. No extra guests will be
served with Christmas dinner.
Thie Hotel Elliot, which normally
accommodates 22 guests, will be
able to take only 12 unless the
staff position improve.s before
Christmas. It has no vacances at
present.
The Robe Hotel has booked as
many guests as it can take. and
has refused many others.
In the hills one guest home is
booked" out for two and three
months ahead. The proprietress
has to do all the laundry and
cooking, and depends on one maid
who works full time. and another
part time. Rooms which .formerly
accommodaed three or four guests
now have only one.
People who formerly went to
quiet country hotels for Christmas
inner will be disappointed this
year. because the hotels cannot
cater for any extra guests.
High Holiday
Rents Illegal
CANBERRA.-If a landlord
raised rent charges without the
authority of the Fair Rents Board
he was acting in contravention of
the regulations. and was. in fact.
committing a breach of the Black
Marketing Act. said the Minister
for Trade and Customs .Senator
Keane) today.
IAnnounciing that tenants 6o ore
mises at holiday resorts would be
fully protected against being
forced to pay high rents during
holiday periods.. the M.inlster
said:
"There is no power to evict a
tenant who refuses to pay higher
rent unless the increased charge is
approved by the Fair Rents
Board.
"Tenants whose rents have been.
raised should apply to the Fair,
Rents Board for protection against
grasping landlords, who seek in
creased rents under the subterfuge
that the premises concerned are,
ordinarily leased for holiday pur-i
poses only.' "
