Elderly fan killed by
fireworks rocket
CARDIFF: An elderly soccer
fan was killed by a fireworks
rocket at the World Cup qualifi-
er between Wales and Romania.
The rocket was fired across
the pitch just before the end of
the match which Wales lost 2-1,
ending their World Cup hopes.
"A fan was killed over in the
north stand by a rocket at the
end of the match," Welsh man-
ager Terry Yorath said.
Yorath, who tragically lost
his own teenage son recently
due to heart failure, added: "It's
so sad and it shows that there's
far more to life than football."
Shocked Welsh fans leaving
the ground said the incident
happened in the north stand in
the closing minutes of the game.
"A rocket hit an elderly man
and as far as we could tell it was
fired from where the Romanian
fans were gathered," one fan
said.
A rocket was fired from the
same area earlier in the game,
according to some fans. A police
spokeswoman said: "We can
confirm that an elderly man has
died in the north stand and ur-
gent inquiries are being carried
out into the incident."
Before the match Chief Su-
perintendent Alan Greaves, in
command of police operations,
issued a widely publicised warn-
ing about the dangers of flares
and fireworks.
