McLeod new security chief
Defence Department Deputy Se
cretary Ron McLeod will succeed
Roger Holditch as Inspector-Gen
oral of Intelligence and Security
from April 6.
Mr Holditch decided to resign
six months early to enable a suc
cessor time to settle in before the
results of the commission of in
quiry into the Australian Secret
Intelligence Service were put into
effect.
A judicial inquiry into ASIS is
to report to the Government by
the end of the month and is like
ly to recommend sweeping re

Mr Holditch held the job since
1989.
The office of inspector-general
was set up in 1986 after the Hope
Royal Commission into Austra
lia's security and intelligence
agencies.
Foreign Minister Gareth Evans
in February set up the inquiry
into ASIS under former NSW Su

went public with allegations
about the service's activities.
