Two stabbed
at Moomba
MELBOURNE: Two young men
were stabbed during the Moomba
carnival wind-up on Sunday even
ing on the Yarra River bank, police
said yesterday.
A 19-year-old man was stabbed
twice in the chest on the south side
of the river about 10pm and was in a
satisfactory condition in Alfred
Hospital.
A second man, aged in his 20s,
was stabbed as he stood outside the
Arts Centre in St Kilda Road in the
same area about 11,30pm. He is in a
stable condition in the Alfred Hos
pital.
Red Cross's $1.6m
MELBOURNE: The annual Red
Cross Calling appeal in Victoria
raised $1.6 million on Sunday, and
officials said they were hopeful of
reaching their target of $2.1 million.
Anzac trading
SYDNEY: Shops in NSW would
be allowed to trade this year on the
Anzac Day holiday on the Monday
following Anzac Day, the NSW
Minister for Industrial Relations,
John Hannaford, said yesterday.
But retailers, excluding super
markets in tourist areas outside the
Sydney metropolitan area, would
voluntarily close on Anzac Day it
self - Sunday, April 25 - as a sign
of respect for veterans.
Toyota 'exploits'
Queensland Labor Senator Mar
garet Reynolds called on the Toyota
company yesterday to withdraw its
advertising campaign featuring a
naked pregnant woman, saying it
exploited women by comparing
them to its latest car.
The advertisement for the new
Toyota Wide Body Twin Camry
shows a pregnant woman's protrud
ing abdomen with the headline:
"There's nowhere more comfort
able than inside a wide body".
Brisbane escaper
BRISBANE: A woman serving a
six-year term for armed hold-up es
caped from the Brisbane Women's
Correctional Centre on Sunday.
Tracey Rose Taylor, 28, is de
scribed as 165cm tall, of slim build
with brown hair and a fair complex

Gymple car deaths
BRISBANE: Two people died
yesterday when their car and a semi
trailer collided head-on on the
Bruce Highway near Gympie in
south-cast Queensland.
Mobile explodes
MELBOURNE- A woman caught
in an explosion which destroyed a
mobile home at a Campbcllfield
caravan park north of Melbourne
yesterday morning told rescuers the
last thing she remembered was
lighting a cigarette.
The woman in her 40s and her
14-year-old son were severely burnt
when their home exploded, possibly
because of a gas leak, at the Sylvan
Caravan Park. Both were in a criti
cal condition.
Carla appointed
SYDNEY: Italian-born and Aus
tralian-raised fashion designer Carla
Zampatti is the latest appointment
to the NSW Migrant Employment
and Qualification Board, the NSW
Government announced yesterday.
