Saints defeat Cats
Geelong managed to retain a
place in the top five despite yester
day's shock defeat against lowly St
Kilda at the Moorabbin Oval.
St Kilda, a three-time loser this sea
son, scored its first win by defeating the
Cats 16.9 (105) to 13.14 (92) in a tough
team performance.
Geelong coach Billy Gpggin said that
St Kilda had tackled and smothered the
ball with more determination than his
team could handle.
Geelong was weakened by the
withdrawal of captain and champion
ccntreman Brian Peake and the creative
ruck-rover Peter Featherby before the
game.
St Kilda's lively start gave it a 34
point break at halftimc after doubling
Geelong's score.
Geelong's frustration came to a flash
point during the third quarter when
defender Paul Jeffries was reported for
allegedly striking St Kilda's Trevor
Barker with a clenched fist to the face
and body by field umpire Glen James.
Geelong's second-half performance
was an improvement and it outscored St
Kilda by nine goals to five.
But in the end the 13-point margin
between the teams was flattering to
Gcelong, which had trailed by 25 points
with only three minutes left to play.
