Hunt for savage crocodile.
DARWIN: Australian National
Parks and Wildlife Service rangers
were hunting in Kakadu National
Park yesterday for the saltwater
crocodile which savaged a Braidwood
woman near the East Aligator River
on Tuesday.
Dr. Val PlumwQod, 38, a Macquarie
University lecturer, was attacked as
she paddled a canoe across a flooded
area near the river.
She struck the reptile with the boat
and it followed and lunged at her
when she climbed out of the canoe
and in to a tree.
It dragged her into the water and
she received deep wounds to the
thighs and buttocks before escaping
and crawling 2km away, where she
was found.
Dr. Plumwood, who had to undergo
extensive emergency surgery, was in
a serious but stable condition last
night in Royal Darwin Hospital.
