MELBOURNE: Collingwood
came from behind in the last
term to sneak in by 10 points
over a luckless Melbourne yester
day in one of the toughest
matches seen at Victoria Park in
years.
After leading at every change,
Melbourne surrendered in the
final minutes to go down to the
Magpies 19.9 (123) to 16.17
(113).
It was a case of Melbourne
losing the match rather than Coll
ingwood winning it, and this was
reflected in comments by both
coaches.
Melbourne coach Ron Barassi
was pleased with his team's per
formance. Collingwood coach
Bob Rose was critical with pas
sages of play from his side.
"We didn't win the points, but
it was stirring effort from our
blokes," Barassi said.
"The young kids we brought in
were great. It was a very en
couraging effort."
Rose conceded his side might
have been lucky to win but was
pleased with a few individual
performances.
"We made a few mistakes and
we didn't seem to have the zip of
past weeks," Rose said.
"We knew Melbourne needed
the four points, and we knew we
would be in for a tough game."
The match was marred by a
number of scuffles, one in the
third quarter involving up to 10
players, but there were no re
ports.
Melbourne was once again led
by its ruckman, Peter Moore,
who was easily best on the
ground and completey domi
nated the centre bounces and
marking duels around the field.
He was well supported by his
skipper, Robert Flower, on the
wing and centre halfback Steven
Icke.
But the difference between the
two teams was Collingwood full
forward Brian Taylor, who
finished the match with seven
goals and could have easily
kicked more.
Despite Melbourne's tagging
tactics, it could not contain Coll
ingwood ruck rovers Peter
Daicos and Mike Richardson,
who both kicked four goals.
Collingwood has won its three
games this season, while Mel
bourne has won one.
