Vikings upset Wests
in first major win
TOUCH
Tuggeranong Vikings has
cracked its first major win of the
season, 2-1, over joint favourites
West Belconnen in the Unisys
men's open division of ACT
Touch's Schweppes Superleague.
In conditions not unlike a
Scottish moor, Tuggeranong
emerged from the fog-enveloped
field with the prized scalp of
Wests in what was a superb de
fensive performance.
• After overcoming a typical
slow start, conceding a touch
down to Peter Dowse, Tugger
anong took control and forced
the victory with two tries to re
cently selected ACT Southern
States representatives Grant Slat
er and Cameron Yabsley.
After the game, Slater was
quick to applaud his team's de
fensive effort. "Simon Minney,
Sean Wood and Kieran
McLaughlan had excellent games
in defence. 1 give all the credit to
them,", he said.
Another good player for the
Vikings was Paul Phillips, who
received the game's most
valuable-player award. Charlie
Edlington continued his good
form for Wests.
Eagles took the outright com
petition lead after overcoming an
improved Riteway team, 5-2.
Much of Riteway's better show
ing can be attributed to Matt Pa
tcman, who joined the team
halfway through the season.
The Riteway team that has
really hit form is its Classic Cars
womens open team, which broke
through for its first win of the
season, 2-1 over Eagles, who had
two of state representatives back.
Likely grand finalists Wests
and Tuggeranong fought a close
tussle in the other women's
game, with Kylie O'Connor (2
touchdowns) getting • her team
home 2-1. Both the 1EA men's
masters games ended in 4-1
scorelines. Eagles beat Riteway,
and Tuggeranong beat Wests.
